Recur Outdoors sells a number of monthly subscription boxes targeting recreational fishermen.

The company has four individual brands, each of which focuses on a specific aspect of fishing.

Recur is targeting the $48 billion recreational fishing market, and the 46 million Americans who enjoy fishing.

The idea for Recur began when co-founders (and brothers-in-law) Brian Runnals and Maciej Labinski noticed that fishing gear was unreasonably expensive.

They decided to create a monthly subscription box for fishing enthusiasts, modeling it after companies such as Dollar Shave Club and Birchbox.

What started as a way to escape family gatherings to get more fishing time quickly transformed into a full-time business.

The company’s original box, Postfly, is geared toward recreational fly fishermen. The boxes come in two sizes, and contain curated fishing flies, accessories, stickers, and news about the latest events in the industry.

Customers set their preferences — for example, what they like to fish for and whether they fish in fresh or salt water — and Recur tailors each box to their needs.

Since debuting Postfly in 2013, Recur has added three additional brands, including:

The Wade Rod Co. - Launched in September 2017, this subscription delivers high performance fishing rods.

Pelican Reels - This brand designs fishing reels, and is expected to launch in fall 2018.

GuideHire - GuideHire gives customers a way to discover and book fishing guides across the U.S.

Recur has generated more than $3.5 million in total revenue, including $1.3 million in 2017.

The company has more than 7,000 active monthly subscribers, and a subscriber retention rate of 94% (which is among the highest we've ever seen.)

In October 2017, Recur partnered with a commercial operations company in Thailand. This gives Recur access to gear and equipment without going through a distributor, which helps the company keep costs down.

In 2019, Recur will introduce tech-enabled kiosks in retail and high-traffic locations. The company is launching a pilot program with these kiosks in January 2019 and projects to have 60 of them up and running by the end of the year.
